In studying and preparing sermons on1 Samuel I have found two particular commentaries to be very helpful to me because of their devotional nature. One is Ralph Dale Davis's 1 Samuel: Looking on the Heart in the Focus on the Bible series. You can purchase it here. The second one is William Blaikie's First Book of Samuel.
