The Lord Reigns - Psalm 97

Introduction – The Lord reigns!  How does this statement strike you?

I.               An Overview of the Whole Psalm.

A.   Verse 1 – the thesis for the whole psalm.

B.    Verses 2-6, 9 – the greatness of the one who reigns and the proof of his sovereignty.

C.    Verse 7 – the appropriate response that should come from all the heathen once they understand that the Lord reigns.

D.   Verses 1b and 8 – the response of the church to the truth of God's sovereignty over all things.

E.    Verses 10 and 12 – the effect that the truth that the Lord reigns should have in the way the Christian lives his/her life.

F.    Verse 11 – what the reigning Lord does for his people.

G.   This psalm is not about one moment in history, but all of history seen from eternity.

II.             What Does It Mean That the Lord Reigns?

A.   First, it means exactly that.

B.    Second, the NT equates God's reign with Christ's reign.

C.    The reign described.

III.           The LORD Reigns: Impact in Our Lives.

A.   Joy, 1, 12.

B.    Thanksgiving, 12.

C.    Peace, 1, 11.

D.   Purity, 10

E.    True worship, 7-9.

F.    Reverence, 9.

G.   Confidence, 10b.

H.   Evangelism, 1.

Conclusion – THE LORD REIGNS!  To the Christian, this is a beautiful idea.

Just One Thing - Ps. 27

Introduction

Have you ever dealt with fear?  Or, Have you had enemies (at least Satan and ourselves)?  Have you cried out to God for deliverance?  Have you been forsake by the closest of kin because of the gospel's sake?  Have you ever been accused of things you didn't do?  Have people who were close to you ever lied about you?  Have you ever sinned and are in need of forgiveness?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this Psalm should speak to your heart.  We can see at least four things that David talks about in this Psalm: his delight in the Lord, the deliverance the Lord brought to him, his desire for the Lord, and his dependence on the Lord.

I.             Delight in the Lord, vv. 1-3.

A.   David's delight in the Lord is based on his confidence in God, v. 3.

B.   The content of David's confidence is that no matter what, the Lord will be his light, salvation, and strength, v. 1.

II.          Deliverance from the Lord, vv. 4-6.

A.   David knows that deliverance comes from God, v. 5.

B.   Knowing that God delivers us from our troubles must generate actions, vv. 4, 6.

III.       Desire for the Lord, vv. 7-10.

A.   David's delighting in the Lord and his knowledge of God's deliverance caused him to desire God even more, v. 8.

B.   David now turns the Lord in prayer, v. 7.

C.   David prays that God would not turn away from him, v. 9, but then he realizes that God will not turn away from him, v.10.

IV.        Dependence on the Lord, vv. 11-14

A.   David closes this Psalm showing his dependence on the Lord, v. 14.

B.   David depended on the Lord for guidance, v. 11.

C.   David depended on the Lord for deliverance, v. 12.

D.  David depended on the Lord for strength, v. 13.

Conclusion

May we delight in the Lord.  May we live according to the truth that deliverance comes from the Lord.  May we desire and depend on him.  May we listen to God's call of v. 14 through Jesus Christ.  Amen.
