First Catechism Questions:
FCQ. 82: What is the second commandment? "You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that it is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments.
FCQ. 83: What does the second commandment teach you? To worship God only as he commands--without any statues or pictures.

Shorter Catechism Questions:
SCQ. 64: What is required in the fifth commandment? The fifth commandment is, Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
SCQ. 65: What is forbidden in the fifth commandment? The fifth commandment forbids the neglecting of, or doing anything against, the honor and duty which belongs to everyone in their several places and relations.
SCQ. 66: What is the reason annexed to the fifth commandment? The reason annexed to the fifth commandment is, a promise of long life and prosperity (as far as it shall serve for God's glory and their own good) to all such as keep this commandment.

Union with Christ - Jn. 13

Introduction – Union with Christ

I.               What Is Union with Christ?

A.   Union with Christ happens when we believe in him for our salvation.
B.    Union with Christ is clearly seen in our justification.
C.    Union with Christ is clearly seen in our adoption.

II.             Being Served by Christ, 1-17

A.   This is happening Thursday night, 1-2.
B.    The motivating factor for what Jesus's actions in chapter 13 and all the teaching in the Upper Room Discourse is his love for his disciples, 1, 3.
C.    Foot washing is not something that is part of our culture today, but it was very common in NT times, 4-5.
D.   After he had washed the feet of a few paralyzed disciples, Jesus gets to Peter and is met with opposition, 6-10.
E.    Back to the original object-lesson: serving one another, 11-17.
F.    Ultimately, we serve one another because we love one another, and that love is a result of Christ's love for us on the cross.

Conclusion – "…see how they are ready even to die for one another…"  Why?  Because they are united to the one who died for them.
