Introduction – Being a real man

I. Basic Characteristics of Masculinity
1. Man was created in God's image, Gen. 1:27.

2. Man was created a worshiper, Rom. 1:21-25.

3. Since the Fall, man has been a sinner by nature, Rom. 3:12.

4. Man is in need of God's saving grace, Titus 3:4-7.

5. Man was not created self-sufficient but needing God and others, Jn. 15:5.

6. Man was created to be different from woman, Gen. 1:27.

II. Characteristics of the Perfect Man—Jesus – Perhaps the single, most emphasized characteristic is humble service, Phil. 2:5-8.

III. Characteristics Drawn from the Qualifications of Male Leadership in the Church

A. A godly man must be:

1. Above reproach: blameless, not able to be accused, having a good reputation.

2. The husband of one wife: a pattern of singular affection for one's wife.

3. Sober-minded: temperate, alert, clear-headed, watchful.

4. Self-controlled: in control of thinking, emotions and passions; prudent, thoughtful, decent.

5. Respectable: orderly in time, responsibilities, and behavior; not chaotic.

6. Hospitable: welcoming to others, loves strangers, serves others.

7. Gentle: considerate, gracious, patient, kind in dealing with others.

8. He must manage his own household well: governs, presides over, has authority over; is faithful to lead spiritually, cares for, protects; has children who are not riotous or insubordinate; oversees and/or fulfills affairs of the home.

9. A lover of good: loves virtue and good men.

10. Upright: just; upholds righteousness.

11. Holy: pure, devout.

12. Disciplined: persevering, steadfast, restrained.

13. Holding firm to the Word: learns and upholds sound doctrine; holds to it tightly; able to exhort and convict.

B. In contrast, a godly man must not be:

1. A drunkard: not addicted to strong drink.

2. Violent: violent, quickly angered, explosively angry.

3. Quarrelsome: contentious, argumentative.

4. A lover of money: covetous, greedy for money, materialistic.

5. Arrogant (self-willed) rather than a steward: pushing his own ideas, desires, goals or gain.

6. Quick tempered: inclined to anger habitually; quickly angry. 


IV. Role Characteristics in Which a Man Must Excel

A. A man must lead.

B. A man must love (the 1 Corinthians 13 Type).

C. A man must protect

D. A man must provide
